The Best Used Cars Under £5,000 in the UK (2025 Picks)
Buying a car on a £5,000 budget in 2025 isn’t as easy as it used to be — but there are still great options out there if you know where to look.
Whether you’re upgrading from an older vehicle, looking for your first reliable daily driver, or want something that feels a little more modern than the £2K market, these cars strike a solid balance between price and practicality.
Here are some of the best used cars you can still find under five grand in the UK this year — plus a few bonus tips to help you buy smart.
1. Honda Civic
Reliable, fun to drive, and surprisingly spacious. The Civic is a great all-rounder and parts are easy to find. Look for models with full service history and avoid anything with rust around the rear arches.
2. Mazda 3
Great to drive and often overlooked, which means you can get more for your money. Just make sure to check for rust — especially on earlier models — and look for one that’s been well maintained.
3. Ford Fiesta (Newer Shape)
For £5,000 you can often get a more modern Fiesta with decent mileage. Cheap to insure and run, and the newer interiors are a nice step up. Watch out for the EcoBoost engines — they can be costly if not looked after.
4. Toyota Auris
Boring? Maybe. But bombproof. The Auris is one of those cars that just works. You won’t win any street races, but it’ll probably never let you down either.
5. Volkswagen Polo
Solid build quality, good safety, and a bit more grown-up than most in this bracket. Try to avoid the 1.2 petrol if you can — the 1.4 or 1.6 versions are usually better bets.
Bonus Buying Tips:
-
Always check the MOT history on GOV.UK before viewing
-
Avoid cars with patchy service records unless priced low enough to cover repairs
-
Take your time on the test drive — 15 minutes minimum, with time at speed
-
If something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut and walk away
